First Week: Surviving CBC Radio 3

CBC Radio 3 | Vancouver, BC

My first week interning at CBC Radio 3 is over and I survived. I had been anticipating this experience for a few months now since winning the Alexis Mazurin Award. It is really a completely different, unique environment. As an online radio station, recently voted Vancouver's favourite, they really do not have a lot of the same concerns terrestrials stations have.

2010 Polaris Music Prize Picks

It is that time of year again. Yes, the Polaris Music Prize celebrates the absolute very best in Canadian music every year based solely on artistic merit as Canadian music artists compete for the top prize of the album of the year award. This year's list of nominations will be announced on June 17 with a shortlist to follow on July 6.

In preparation for my fall internship at CBC Radio 3, I have been boning up on the latest and greatest in all things Canadian music. It is truly a great time for the Canadian music scene right now. So, below is my humble, but far from comprehensive, top five list of picks for the best Canadian albums of the past year. Hopefully, one day I will be esteemed enough to have an official vote on the Polaris panel of jurors.

Fun fact: I have seen four out of five of my picks perform live. Two Hours Traffic is the only one I have yet to see.

A Night at MOV | Museum of Vancouver

As a part of my effort to break into the Vancouver arts and culture scene as a reporter and journalist, I attended the first (and hopefully not last) edition of the "A Night at MOV with Conor Holler" live talk show at the Museum of Vancouver. The show, organized by Vancouver Is Awesome and the local Vancouver arts community, aimed to revive a past era of old-fashioned comedy and entertainment in talk show form. Not knowing what to expect or what the night would entail, I was pleasantly surprised.

CBC Radio 3: Women That Rock

I recently applied for the Alexis Mazurin Award at CBC Radio 3. This required that I submit a project pitch (read below) for their production. I decided to pitch a music series based around Canadian bands with female lead singers/vocalists and frontmen. In addition, I produced and recorded my own sample podcast for it. Check it out and give it a listen. (Right-click to download.)
