Vancouver indie pop duo Fake Tears go hard on the 1980s new wave aura and feel in their debut album, Nightshifting. Veteran musicians Larissa Loyva (aka Kellarissa, P:ano, The Choir Practice) and Elisha May Rembold (Shimmering Stars, Lost Lovers Brigade) channel their voices in a blissful tandem with some unmistakable synth tones evoking mellow, nocturnal themed instrumentals.

CBC brought their popular Winnipeg-based, Toronto-hosted DNTO (aka "Definitely Not the Opera") radio show to Vancouver for a special live show and taping. They brought me along for the ride as their local correspondent to share and document all the highlights from the night.

What a show. A positive "Trainwreck", if you will. Toronto dancer punk rockers, Death From Above 1979 (duo Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler), sweated out an intense, vibrant, and very, very loud set to a raucous, all-ages crowd of adoring fans at the Vogue. It was raw, visceral, and bordering on euphoric from the front row. My ears and head-shaking neck still ache (a good ache, mind you) from the rhythmic satisfaction of their pulsating sounds well into the night.

New Music: Death From Above 1979 Enters 'The Physical World'

"The thing that we learned in our time away is that the band exists without us."

It's only slightly odd how it took ten years after Death From Above 1979's initial breakthrough effort, You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, for the Toronto dance punk duo to finally release their sophomore record. All this is happening after their quiet break up and subsequent reunion over creative differences and mutual acrimony/hostility. The Physical World is finally here and it definitely shows a decade of growth and musical sophistication while still harkening to the band's trademark visceral sound.
