Olympic Village—(October 13, 2022) Honolulu Coffee recently opened a brand new twenty-five-seat location in the False Creek area to complement its two other Hawaiian-style cafés.
Mount Pleasant—One of Vancouver's newer and definitely funkier craft breweries, Electric Bicycle Brewing's tasting room has quietly made itself a standout in the crowded beer scene with its uniquely original attitude inside and out of its industrial and well-populated Brewery Creek neighbourhood.
Mount Pleasant—After a few short months open and many delays before that, R&B Ale & Pizza House has quickly become a charming, neighbourhood fixture in its once predominantly industrial surroundings. After their acquisition by Howe Sound Brewing last year, R&B Brewing Co. (est. 1997) looks primed for a resurgence after being the "East Van Original" of the local craft beer scene it help start.
Fairview Slopes—The still relatively new Porto Café in Cambie Village has been experimenting with an expanded food service and drink program. For example, I was taken with their deconstructed espresso macchiato (made of a shot of espresso, crema, and soda water) for an interesting and refreshing take on getting caffeinated.
Fairview Slopes—Cambie Village has a new and bustling coffee shop in Porto Café. For myself, it's already become one of my favourite spots for a quick cup o' joe to spend an hour on break.
Olympic Village—(September 6, 2015) Over Labour Day weekend, I was invited by local tech startup Latergramme (the app that lets you schedule your Instagram posts) to speak at their Latergrammers Meetup with fellow Instagram'ers at the last Food Cart Fest of the summer.
Strathcona—Long in the works, Red Truck Beer Company's big, shiny, and brand new brewing facilities are finally fully open. Centred in the still up and coming industrial area (historically known as Brewery Creek) that currently meets at the triple nexus of Strathcona, Mount Pleasant, and Olympic Village, the American style diner meets craft brewpub hybrid looks very bright and appealing right off the bat.
Owners Ben Ernst and Erica Bernardi, who started out selling their artisan ice cream at farmers markets and on their bicycle cart (now displayed above their entrance), quickly outgrew Earnest Ice Cream's first, part-time Fraserhood neighbourhood shop and have finally expanded to their new, spacious, second location on East 2nd Avenue and Quebec Street, near Olympic Village.
I'm a big fan of the collaborate art blog Booooooom! and founder/Japanese-Canadian artist Jeff Hamada's work. When Hamada announced his "Drawing on the Past" art project and collaboration with Herschel Supply Co. in making a limited edition backpack (only 75 made) based on his childhood sleeping bag with liner artwork by Andrea Wan, I had to snap one up quickly. It's pretty cool.
Quebec's Cirque du Soleil travelling acrobatic show continues to to evolve with its aptly evolutionary themed (and first hybrid show) Totem. Written and directed by Robert Lepage (Kà), Totem premiered in 2010 and is the tenth Cirque show to visit Vancouver since 1986.
The month of NovemberMovember is still aways away. However, the ever growing Mo' Bros and Mo' Sistas community here got together to remind us about men's health and how our special month is just around the corner. The renewed effort, dubbed "Movember & Sons" (after our bearded English folk rocker friends), emphasizes the family aspect and teaches all of us the importance of sticking together. So in celebration of all things moustache'd, we got together for a "family reunion" taking place at The Village on False Creek. Only three months out!
