Oakland-based The Coup rapper turned sophomore filmmaker Boots Riley brings his imaginiative tastes back to the big screen in I Love Boosters, a radically anti-capitalist heist comedy screed (complimentary) about a crew of professional female African-American activist shoplifters, dubbed the "Velvet Gang" (Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, and Taylour Paige), in the East Bay that target the designer clothing made by a cutthroat but monochromatic fashion maven played by Demi Moore.

Co-starring Poppy Liu, Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, and an unrecognizable Don Cheadle, the film is an unabashed cry against the exploitation of overseas garment factory working conditions and the twisted economics of fast fashion, doubling as a call to unite for workers' rights against corporate mistreatment. Everyone dials it up to eleven as they elevate the often bizarre but cautionary material about societal division.

Riley employs colourful, hyper-stylized animation, miniatures, basic effects, and other inventive yet tried filmmaking techniques to fully realize his gonzo allegorical tale of consumer revenge as an unabashed leftist satire. His bedazzled cast of all-star players hype up the material through physical comedy, wild costuming, and big performances that highlight how the wealthy elite have effectively divided members of the working class against each other for their own continued gain.

After his first wildly ambitious film, Sorry to Bother You, and dizzying television series, I'm A Virgo, Riley has refined his high-concept, anti-gravity cinematic style and surreal socialist aesthetic to better results. I Love Boosters wondrously balances its absurdly maximalist realities with some unfortunately very real elements of our current economic landscape to advocate for the labour solidarity while criticizing runaway capitalism. It's a comically sophisticated fairytale vision of democratic socialism that is entertaining throughout. Finally, it also happens to feature maybe the most creative and artistic depiction of cinematic cunnilingus ever put to screen.

I Love Boosters screened as the opening film of the 2026 Seattle International Film Festival as part of the New American Cinema program.
