VIFF 2026—Long Island native and gay comedian Jordan Firstman makes his impressive directorial debut in the surprisingly touching adult comedy, Club Kid. Essentially a riff on the basic premise of the Adam Sandler comedy, Big Daddy, Firstman's Peter is a hedonistic, queer party promoter who learns he has an adorable ten-year-old son (Reggie Absolom) he never knew about when they are unceremoniously dropped on his New York City doorstep.

Firstman builds a lived-in world with Cara Delevingne and Kirby Howell-Baptiste in hilarious turns as drugged-out co-conspirators, as well as Diego Calva as the charming love interest. Full of queer characters, hard drug use, profanity, and actual club culture depicted, the authenticity of this debauched world certainly feels real on screen. However, there's so much both sweet and filthy humour about unlikely parenthood being thrust upon you as essentially a middle-aged adult child.

It's an intensely heartwarming indie comedy about loving yourself through someone else. Firstman's hilarious yet moving portrait of reluctant fatherhood and embracing love proves to be a real tearjerker despite its often explicit material about alternative lifestyles. Club Kid celebrates the flaws and weaknesses of anyone being overcome by the love of a child.

Club Kid screened at the 2026 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations series at both the Vancouver Playhouse and Park Theatre.
