There's so much to Schoenbrun's visual and atmospheric vision of an abandoned, remote camp being taken over by a Norma Desmond-type faded star who entices a bookishly sexless Gen Z artist while they eat candy, fried chicken, and watch old film prints of influential but now problematic, low-budget slasher flicks from the past. It's a mesmerizing yet voyeuristic work of queer self-examination and giving in to our most basic carnal pleasures. For all intents and purposes, the film is a coming-out party for everyone involved's mixed identities and pop cultural influences.
Schoenbrun affectionately pays homage to the teen slasher film subgenre through their truly sapphic, extra post-modern retelling told through an unabashedly queer and explicitly transgender context. Camp Miasma also acts as a sexy ode to horror sexual awakenings that balances contemporary "woke" themes of gender inclusion while reclaiming our nostalgic provocations. It further analyzes our current media diet and consumption with its clever backstory of the film series-within-a-film's fictional franchise history devolving into self-parody.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma screened at the 2026 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. It screens exclusively at the Rio Theatre starting August 14th.
