This weekend's HTML500 free coding event was a very popular attraction. The waitlist is over 2,200 people deep for the annual day-long, 500-person tutorial aiming to teach newbies how to code (HTML and CSS) and promote overall digital literacy in Canada.

Spearheaded by Lighthouse Labs, along with the Vancouver Economic Commission, BC Innovation Council (BCIC), Telus, and some of Canada's top fifty tech companies all represented, the HTML500 means to develop and promote technological skills and careers in a collaborative environment within our local communities.

Along with its goal to educate, the HTML500 tied for the Guinness Book of World Records' distinction as the largest single-day computer programming class (while already being Canada's largest coding event) after expanding to other cities like Calgary, Toronto, and London.

The all-day learning session was a diverse affair with patrons young and old eager to learn how to code and kickoff their web building skills surrounded by developers and mentors (paying it forward) to aid and bridge any technological gaps.

By most accounts, it was another successful endeavour in furthering digital literacy as a continuing and important factor in our community.
