BEERFEST | Farm Fresh Beer x Barnside Brewing Co. x Delta

Barnside Brewing Co. | Delta, BC

Delta—Finally, there's another local craft brewery and tasting room in the Ladner area. Thanks to the brand new, family-owned Barnside Brewing Co. located in the thick of the Delta farmlands, my hometown has a second (very good) option for freshly brewed beer.

Situated in the middle of nowhere, a short trip from the George Massey Tunnel in the Delta agricultural community of Crescent Slough, the brewery—a collaboration of members of four different Delta farming families going back a century—is located on/next to/across the street from the family hops and organic barley farm (also potatoes, cranberries, and honey) whose ingredients are used in Barnside's brewing.

It's impressive how Barnside managed to launch with a full-fledged lineup of seven core beers in addition to a few rotating seasonal and specialty ales including some barrel-aged and fresh taps of the day:
  • Cresent Island brown ale: full of classic, frothy flavour.
  • Altbier (fresh tap): bold and malty in its taste and complexion.
  • Hop Yard sour: solid balance of sour and overall flavour.
  • Burns Bog Peaty brown ale (barrel-aged): smooth and thick in its appeal.
  • Honeycomb pale ale: refreshing with a not-too-sweet honey aftertaste.
  • Smash pale ale: pretty standard in its taste and overall feel.
  • Farmer's Tap lager: a very easy-drinking, everyday lager.
  • Cranberry tart ale: a standout for its balance of fruitiness and not overly tart.

I really dug the overall taste and varieties of the beers available so far with a nice balance between everyday standards and more inventive ales full of fresh local flavours including cranberries from nearby fields.

Enough can't be said about the scenic, remote location only a short drive from the award-winning original Delta brewery Four Winds on the industrial side of town. In the summer, you'll be able to sip your beer (poured from your growler, if you wish) on their farm patio in full view of their hops field across the street—where spillover parking is also located.

Five years in the making, Barnside's appeal leans into their "Farm Fresh BC Beer" motto full of homegrown ingredients. You can tell the level of detail and precision they have put into their brewing passion project. There's a lot of be excited about and plenty of room in the Ladner/Delta beer market.
