Granville Island—(September 28, 2021) From the team behind Chancho and Nuba restaurants and spearheaded by Mexican-Canadian chef/restaurateur Ernesto Gomez, Alimentaria Mexicana opened its authentic cantina eatery over the summer in the former Edible Canada location to much delight and early acclaim.

Gomez and his team, including chef/partner Martin Vargas (Fayuca), have set a culinary plan aiming for a multi-faceted and fully immersive culinary project beyond just an authentic Mexican restaurant with an ever-expanding menu of family-style dishes in the heart of Granville Island.

Alimentaria is making a concerted effort to bring a variety of Mexican dishes, flavours, and traditions to their dining establishment in order to showcase all the diverse elements that tell the varied stories of the culinary heritage of MÄ“xihco.

So far, their array of dishes is as delightful as it is delectable from the dynamite (sashimi-grade) Albacore tuna ceviche to the braised duck flautas (rolled and fried tortillas) and unique halloumi and grilled cactus. However, the clear highlight was the richly decadent sopes with bone marrow—a Tijuana classic, apparently.

Alimentaria has also just opened its back marketplace space, Mercado—where they are selling locally and internationally sourced artisanal provisions, handmade textiles, woven goods, pottery, tortilla presses, books, utensils to take home—in addition to their El Caminero takeout window.

Next up, Fabrica, an open kitchen space specializing in producing handcrafted artisanal corn tortillas and other delights where guests can contribute to Gomez’s ongoing social mission to support and celebrate farmers and suppliers from small communities across Mexico, is set to open soon.
