Rain City Ricky cocktail (with gin, cucumber, mint, lime, lemongrass, and soda)
Started by the husband-and-wife team of Dan Leung and Wanda Lai, and drawing on their combined two decades plus of culinary experience, the restaurant specializes in international-themed dishes that both reflect and celebrate the cultural diversity of Vancouver, drawing on cuisines from Asia to Europe and the Americas.
Steak Your Claim grilled 8-oz. rib eye steak (with chimichurri, Kennebec fries, shishitÅ peppers, and balsamic demi glaze)
Executive Chef Dan Leung, the gastronomic mind behind Danz Gourmet catering, finds the challenge in blending distinct tastes to produce meals that are unconventional yet relatable.
Keeping with their intercontinental theme, the bar aims to shake things up with six original cocktails on the menu, each with its own twist on classic drinks.
Heart Attack Rice (with schmaltz stir-fried rice pilaf, chicken confit, and an egg)
Live-edge tables and indigo hues of Rise's signature colourscape give off a relaxed vibe while sculptural copper accents suggest an elevated level of sophistication. The presentation is top-notch, but perhaps, there's a little too much focus on appearances (including Instagram-friendly plating).
Shio Koji salted rice malt roasted chicken thighs (with Japanese potato salad)
Rise has debuted with an ambitious menu of internationally influenced global flavours. However, they might have bitten off more than they can chew.
A full tasting of their initial menu revealed a disappointing lack of focus and any standout flavours, with the simplest dishes consistently the best, despite some offbeat ingredient use. While early, they still have a long way to go in refining their cuisine and improving things so far.
