FEAST | Tequila Dinner x Tacofino Commissary

Tacofino Commissary | East Hastings, Vancouver

Grandview–Woodland—(March 29, 2016) Hot on the heels of celebrating their first Tacoversary in GastownTacofino Commissary hosted a one-night only tequila tasting and four-course pairing dinner at their East Hastings location this past week with unsurprisingly delicious results.

For blue agave aficionados, their thirsts were quenched among the Commissary's communal tables for a savoury tasting menu that paired Mexican-inspired west coast fare with an array of south-of-the-border spirits such as blanco, reposado, and añejo varieties of tequila.

First up, the wild Argentinian prawn ceviche (with sorrel, avocado, papaya, pepper, lime, coconut water, tiger's milk, yucca crisps, and fresh nacho chips) paired with a Papalote Rehilete Blanco tequila were both my highlights of the night. The ceviche was fresh, well-seasoned with contrasting flavours, and delicious particularly with the smooth blanco.

Next, the smoked tuna tostada (with charred plantain and avocado crema, collard slaw, pickles, tamarind salt, and habanero oil) paired with a Wansas Reposado tequila was a culinary punch to the senses. The tuna was delightful with a nice crunch from its shell and toppings going down with the stiff tequila.

For the main, the pork cheek and belly barbacoa gordita (with sweet and savoury mung beans, green mole, zapote negro, tomatillo, and pickled onions) paired with a Aha Yeto Añejo tequila was a substantial, meaty endeavour full of tasty sauces and well-cooked pork complementing the refreshing spirit. For dessert, the Cotija churro taco (with pear sorbet and diablo sauce) paired with a Koch el Mezcal was a sweet and crunchy cool down treat and crisp nightcap to the evening.

Curated by the Tacofino team in partnership with Jonathan Smolensky of Sovereign Wine & Spirits, the evening gave diners a delectable opportunity for both the curious and fans alike to sip on all things tequila and some of Mexico’s best agave exports while the tasty menu was specially curated to accent each of the spirits selected.

Update: Tacofino has officially announced plans for a brand new Yaletown location (their fourth) set to open sometime in June.
