Portland Trip: Late dinner at Screen Deer restaurant in Kerns on August 16, 2013.

There are some meals that almost kill you. This was one of those. Admittedly, I didn't enter this late dinner on the ideal circumstances. I had been hotly anticipating eating at Screen Door for some time. I'd heard things about their well known Southern comfort food and particularly the fried chicken.

I love fried chicken, and with that, ordered their specialty crispy fried buttermilk-battered chicken (with tasso ham gravy, mashed potatoes, and collard greens).

I still can't believe how much chicken came on a single plate. Two massive, boneless, all white meat pieces were perfectly battered and fried. For less than $15, you pretty much get all the white meat on a chicken and its deliciously deep fried, crispy skin.

This was easily some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Despite not being that hungry, just scarfing down a maple bacon doughnut from Voodoo, and being almost 10 o' clock at night, I was determined to finish every piece of chicken and mashed potatoes. I did it with some struggle. It was delicious but certainly a lot of meat. My friends shared a plate and couldn't finish, so proceed with caution. Don't be a hero.
