"VIFF is back with an incredible program dedicated to the power and potential of cinema."VIFF 2022—(September 7, 2023) Our city's eleven-day arthouse cinema showcase in the 41st annual Vancouver International Film Festival is back at the end of the month with a return to full-scale in-person cinematic programming. Once again, VIFF is celebrating all forms of multimedia storytelling by showing hundreds of local, Canadian, and international films dedicated to furthering contemporary world cinema.
Here are ten films I recommend you check out at VIFF this year to get you started:
The Banshees of Inisherin (dir. Martin McDonagh)
When Colm (Brendan Gleeson) decides he's had enough of his best pal (Colin Farrell) because he's just too boring, the entire village is consumed in the drama in this contemplative and uproarious comedy. (Special Presentations, Ireland)
Broker (dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda)
Working for the first time in South Korea, Kore-eda has come up with a sprawling crime story about a baby adoption scam. But in his characteristic style, the tone is predominantly compassionate and melancholy—even the cops warm to the perpetrators. (Closing Gala, South Korea)
Call Jane (dir. Phyllis Nagy)
A privileged housewife in 1968 Chicago finds herself at odds with the patriarchal medical establishment when she requires an abortion to save her life. A timely and relevant film about reproductive justice in the year that Roe v. Wade was overturned. (Showcase, USA)
Decision to Leave (dir. Park Chan-wook)
The Handmaiden filmmaker teases audiences with a tantalizing genre piece, a neo-noir mystery about a homicide detective who falls in love with the widow of an apparent suicide. (Special Presentations, South Korea)
Golden Delicious (dir. Jason Karman)
A coming-of-age story about an Asian-Canadian teenager who is torn between his girlfriend's dreams of their future and his father's ambition all the while struggling with finding himself and his feelings for the boy next door. (Northern Lights, Canada)
The Grizzlie Truth (dir. Kathleen S. Jayme)
The Finding Big Country director is out to solve a true sports crime: who robbed us of the Vancouver Grizzlies? Jayme revisits the short history of those bad luck bears, connecting the dots and reconnecting with the Grizzlies heroes and villains. (Special Presentations, Canada)
Stars at Noon (dir. Claire Denis, France)
A U.S. journalist is marooned in Managua, stripped of her passport, and forced to trade sex for protection. An English businessman seems a good prospect, but gradually she sees he's in more trouble than she is. (Special Presentations, France)
Triangle of Sadness (dir. Ruben Östlund)
A luxury cruise for the super-rich goes very, very wrong in this social satire from the director of The Square. Uproariously funny at times and deeply cynical, this is a must-see. (Special Presentations, Sweden)
The Whale (dir. Darren Aronofsky)
Charlie (Brendan Fraser) may finally realize his wish of eating himself to death. First, he reaches out to the teenage daughter he hasn't seen in ten years. This compassionate chamber piece is a change of pace from the Black Swan director. (Special Presentations, USA)
Women Talking (dir. Sarah Polley)
This riveting adaptation of Miriam Toews' novel is unquestionably daunting, but the treatment is impassioned and fierce—and, often, also, desperately funny. (Special Presentations, USA)
Every year, VIFF offers entertainment beyond film screenings with a slate of alternative programming spearheaded by a diverse group of artists and creators including emerging forms of digital storytelling and live media showcases coming from its VIFF Live, Creator Talks, Amp (live music), Labs (creators), and new Signals (digital) programs.
