BEERFEST | 33 Brewing Exp(eriment) x Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant—33 Acres Brewing Co. quietly opened a secondary experimental craft brewery next door to its original tasting room location. 33 Brewing Exp only further heightens the brand's taste for simple design and refreshing beer.



Immediately, you'll notice the lack of seating and a wide open space that resembles a minimalist Scandinavian furniture store or student lounge more than a craft brewery.



While I've always enjoyed 33 Acres and its very precise efforts and place within the local craft brewery scene, their beers are often so meticulously thought out, brewed, and tightly executed to fit their clean and straightforward aesthetic.



So I was undoubtedly thrilled to learn they had opened another complementary brewery right next door whose chief concern was making and serving only more experimental efforts with new flavour combinations akin to what Brassneck has always done.



After only a couple months of operation, there's already a long list of different beers made and served. Of their two primary core beers, I found the Pacific hazy pale ale (nectarine, apricot, fresh) infinitely tasty and smooth drinking. What's already probably my go-to beverage at the new 33 is the fine dark mild (roasted malt, toffee, coffee) for its easy drinking, full-bodied yet darkly satisfying taste.



Next, the American Berliner Weisse (lemon, tart, crisp) was a fairly light and appealing German sour white beer. I also found the black oat ale (coffee, caramelized, smooth) nicely rich in quality without any overly sweet notes to it.



For the more experimental, the date shake ale (dates, cinnamon, creamy) was just as creamy as advertised and nice going down. Finally, DDH IPL (double dry-hopped India pale lager) with Mandarina and Bavaria (tangerine, citrus, crisp) was another fruity yet mild effort full of intriguing flavour notes.



I was immediately enamoured with Exp's inviting and even starker demeanour. The beer continues to be good and, if nothing else, the new experimental tasting room lets the brewery be even more of itself with a brand new (somewhat separate) moniker. 33 Brewing Exp certainly did not disappoint, especially if you are looking for a playful twist on 33 Acres' usual fare.
