I love discovering new music, especially acts that are little known and are up and coming. I already mentioned the Music Waste show I attended, mostly to see Petroleum By-Product perform once again. It was a great lineup of interesting musical acts. One of the other groups that played that night were the two-piece alternative Vancouver dance outfit, Cosmetics.
The couple have a relatively low-key setup that really provides a cool, casual, intriguing sound and atmosphere. It is clear that the Vancouver duo's "seductive minimalist dance music is good enough to hook anyone after one listen."
Their sex infused lyrics set a great mood for the audience even with their slightly darkly tinged tones and beats as they performed in the darkened hall.
Their groove-soaked act give off a vibrant charm and relaxed feeling that really hooked me. Somewhat undiscovered until recently, Cosmetics embody a creatively outgoing yet soft musical attitude and lifestyle that hauntingly reflect an eclectic feel but remains easy to listen to.
Cosmetics recently signed with New Yorker label, Captured Tracks, and are working on a forthcoming release. Listening to their set at Music Waste, you could tell that they were in the midst of refining their music even further.
Despite their limited library, Cosmetics have crafted an engaging, undeniably sexy sound that begs to be revisited.
